Shayne completed an Honours degree in Quantum Optics at the Australian National University then moved to industry where for a decade he developed lasers and laser systems for the Australian Defence Science and Technology Organization. Looking for a new challenge he went back to the Australian National University to start a PhD project with the aim of creating the first continuous Rubidium atom laser. After 18 months it was apparent that Strontium possessed many advantages over Rubidium so in 2014 he joined Florian Schreck’s Strontium BEC group at UvA to pursue a continuous atom laser using Strontium.
Shayne is currently working towards making what we hope will be the first continuous atom laser. He has interests in lasers and optics, atom optics, atom and molecule cooling technologies, and applications of these technologies. Applications include sensors, precision measurement, quantum memory, quantum computation and quantum simulation.
